A Porsche Twin Turbo Killer? The 2008 Nissan GT-R Skyline

According to Sport Compact Car (August 2006 Issue), Porsche’s new 997 Twin Turbo will be seriously challenged by the secretive release of the also much awaited 2008 Nissan Skyline (the rest of the world should have it in 2007, it is expected in the USA in 2008).
So lets compare what is speculated to be included with the new Skyline and the Porsche 997 Twin Turbo.
2008 Nissan GT-R Skyline
480 hp V-6 Twin Turbo
500 lbs of torque
AWD with all wheel steering
Price: Est. $70,000 US

2007 Porsche 911 (997) Twin Turbo
480 hp Flat Six
450 lbs of Torque
AWD with Porsche’s excellent suspension and braking they have become legend
Price: between $130,000-$140,000 US

Okay so without driving these cars you can see the similarity in raw numbers and setup, but what I think will really separate these machines will be the buyers. A Porsche Twin Turbo buyer will probably never truly feel the absolute power of the legendary twin turbo Porsche, whereas the Skyline’s buyer will probably put it on a track at least once.
Keep in mind that both of these manufacturers have been producing these cars for some time. Porsche has been producing a turbo 911 body car since 1976. Nissan has been producing a Skyline since 1964 and first turbo charged it in 1987.
Look out America, the Japanese are finally bringing their monsters.

Having been to a few road racing tracks, ive seen TONs of porsches. I think the porsche owners will be tracking their cars just as much, if not more than the nissan owners..
also don’t forget about the weight of these cars.. while Nissan hasn’t released any weight #’s, it looks to be a pretty heavy car.

The question was not just Porsche owners in general tracking their cars, the question was how many new Porsche Turbo owners as compared to new Nissan Skyline owners will subject their car to the track.

To think that people are really going to look at these two cars as options against one another to actually purchase is just rediculous!
A porsche is in a league of it’s own for prestige of which a nissan will never come close.
Really don’t know who wites this kind of stuff…

Being that this is a German car blog, you would imagine that I would favor the Porsche (which I do), but to say that the Skyline has not earned a tremendous amount of respect is pure ingnorance. The comparison is a purely performance prespective. The Prestige you speak of about owning a Porsche is your opinion, but I am sure that a Skyline fan would differ in opinion. Skylines are also a legendary vehicle which command alot prestige in the USA and are much more of a rarity than the Turbo Porsche.

I think that more Porsche owners in Germany will have a daily opportunity to test the true performance due to not having speed limits on the Autobahn (german highway). I also think it is beyond ridiculous to compare any Nissan to a Porsche. I agree completely with Tarvis “A Porsche is in a league of it’s own for prestige of which a Nissan will never come close”. As for what the Administrator has to say about performance comparison is not very well educated in sports cars. Look at the TWIN TURBO specs and you will see who is truly worthy of “TREMENDOUS RESPECT”!!!!
SKYLINE Fans: Cute car, but not a PORSCHE!!!
On March 15th, 2007 at 8:58 am
The performance is absolutely on the same level. I understand that Porsche admirers and owners do not want a Japanese vehicle to approach their level of performance, but the fact is that they have and do and have been for many years. Understand that I would much rather own the Porsche, but I wouldn’t mind test driving the Skyline.

Both cars are pretty awsome, I tend 2 favour the porsche, but I don’t mind the Skyline
On July 17th, 2007 at 6:32 am
ok seems like mr. tim has very little knowledge about cars and how they perform.ok a porsche 911 twin turbo does 4.3 sec 0-60 and a quarter mile time of 12.8.an R34 GTR NISSAN SKYLINE does 3.0 sec. flat on 0-60. and a quarter mile time of 10.1 sec . in other words go home and do your home work! and yes nissan cars has been known to go over 1000 + hp and over 200 mph on street drag races.im talking about cars that are driven daily to work and back
On July 24th, 2007 at 4:32 am
Well me and Francisco tink dat all yall are wrong about the porche. And dat da skyline is better. In your face

touche to the numbe one post! four wheel steering is no feather lite business, that stuff weighs alot, porsches widebody makes for widder wheels, wich everyone knows wut that means, more traction, andn the guy who says the 911 does 0-60 in 4.3, get off crack it does it in 3.3, according to the test done in the november edition of road and track ha your the one that shud do his homework, take the skyline back to japan its got no place among real cars, PORSCHE! ALL THE WAY!
On August 25th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
oh i forgot that was no stock twin turbo skyline doing the 0-60 in 3 flat, there was a lot of money poured into that car to make it go that speed, i dont know if you know that the porsche has got a sport chrono feature that adds 45 ft pounds of torque top boost it up to 505 ft punds pf torque, now i didnt make this clear, i like the Corvette ZO6, im not to much of an import guy at all but the porsche definatley impresses me

I like this car, I love it because I like the design and I think it is one of the best racing cars that I have ever seen.

Ok, first of all, I have a 2007 Porche 911 Twin Turbo sitting in the driveway and I love it. It is my pride and joy. I do prefer Porche.
On October 29th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
okay first off you are all idiots talking about porches and skylines doing 0-60 in 3 flat…. that is unless they both threw an extra 90 grand in the engine then threw on the N2O bottle set it to 500 shot and got the ONE good run at the track barley pulling a 10.6 as it blows the motor across the finish line… the f***ing Bugatti Veyron does 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and did i mention over 250mph… i’m pretty sure i saw a video once of a super-modded skyline hitting 190 on the freeway, and i’ve heard of a million dollar 9 second 911TT but these cars aren’t quite what you make them out to be… losers….
On November 2nd, 2007 at 9:34 am
Funny how with all the similarities between the two cars, and a huge difference in the price between the two, how one can say a Porsche is a better “Value” when the skyline is clearly a better choice.
Thank you
On November 2nd, 2007 at 10:16 am
If God was driving.. it would be a skyline.
Wise choice…
On November 19th, 2007 at 10:29 am
all of you have no clue about cars. the new skylines 0-60 actualy is 3.5 and it actualy gets 0-62 to be specific. the car weighs 1.78 tons which is much less then a GERMAN car. if you dont know enough about cars id be happy to tell you that GERMAN cars come with about twice as much weigh then any other car. And how could you come to compare an exotic to a tuner car? if you tune the skyline, it would pass easely from the porche twin turbo, beleive me i know i have the porche twin turbo GAMBALLA and ive passed it limits by a lot and when it comes to stability, breaks, and ground coverage its amazing, but it will be no match for th ‘08 skyline which seems to have better aerodynamics
On November 19th, 2007 at 2:14 pm
hey guys…. it’s not much about fighting over these cars… it’s just everyone’s preference
first of all… i would give me choice, which definately has to be the GT-R… yes NISSAn GT-R (it’s not skyline as some of u call it… it’s only NISSAN GT-R)
skylines have always raped the porsches - even in the early 1989 when the r32GT-R skyline was first made….. the japanese have always envied porsches, so in 1989 they built the r32GT-R just to beat the then super car porsche 996 (not sure about the number, perhaps it’s 966)
take the fact guys…. and accept it, the japs have always been better thn we westerns… we have not yet realized the potential of these eastern japs…
p.s. do u all know, the GT-R has beaten bugatti-corvette-and many other cars time in the nurburgring (or whtever the spelling are)…. the GT-R was some seconds faster thn the bugatti !
now u decide which is better… a cheap cut-price supercar-slayer…. or an extraordinary ugly looking porsches…
peace,
cheers,
GT-R !

you know i am a huge fan of the Porche BUT when you have a NISSAN that can hang with a Porche…….WOW…… and after looking at the new Skyline…..i think it can spank a Porche’s ass……
On December 20th, 2007 at 8:58 pm
wow… hahaha this is hillarious a bunch of loosers trying to compare a nissan to a 911(the most decorated race car throughout history). yes the new gt-r is a nice car but please…spare me your comparisons. its on the same level as a 911 tt, and it never will be.
P.S and honestly what car would you rather be rolling around in..PORSCHE!! HANDS DOWN
On January 4th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Cool car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On February 12th, 2008 at 1:01 am
Dear fellow car fans
I have been reading all the comments and are amazed at what I hear. You must remember that the Nissan and Porsche are aiming for 2 totally different markets. The Porsche has all the prestige, racing heritage and attention to detail, where the Nissan GTR is more about the balls to the wall hardcore racer. Yes, Nissan would like to incorporate a lot of the Porsche in the Nissan, cause it is a proven concept, but as the Japs have all way done, is bringing you a quality product for a better price.
Give each car what it deserves. Respect.

Isn’t that Nissan testing its GT-R with Porsche on the track? It simply implies Porsche is a benchmark in the class. Porsche will never think about including a Nissan in its test. It will be rediculous.
Isn’t that Nissan GT-R’s front grill looks much like a Mitsubishi latest EVO. Also heard that all parts come from different parts of the world. They should have got their GT-R logo contracted from Porsche. Anyways…ridiculous emblem.
On April 2nd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Yes Nissan used a porsche to be their bench mark. In the recent Road and Track the porsche and corvette Z06 are about a tenth of a second quicker to 60 but the GTR spanked them around the race track.

Hi all,
Porsche is a beautifully engineered vehicle with much fan fare but an average car driver and would never use all that power and muscle. I recently purchased a sports car –> Lotus Exige S which was half the cost of the Porsche. I just love it. European car with a Toyota built engine.
On February 5th, 2009 at 7:10 am
amazinggggggggggggg
On April 24th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
the thing about this is that nissan used the porche as the bench mark so they aimed for it as soon as they beat it put it on the market.big deal we all know porche is dedicated to performance so in the near future their going to release another car that can whip its ass not to mention the fact that they are comparing a 911 tt to the gtr because they are relativly equivalent in price and power train but porche has the GT that will dominate.YoMamma is an idiot it is better in value because you cant find a running base 911 for less than 10 grand
